Final Blog- Aisha Townsend

I wasn't necessarily surprised by the creativity that I was able to witness and share with my friends because I know that Butler students have some amazing imaginations. The piece that really caught my attention was a sketch I believe. It was a heart that was planted in the ground with roots growing out of it. I forgot to read the card but I took a personal understanding of the piece due to how I was feeling that day. I read it as saying that love grows and can grow strong when you've planted it and care for it the right way. It caught my eye because it was beautifully sketched and powerful to look at. As I'm sure everyone knows by now, I am an overly involved individual but I do it because it's something that I have a passion for and it is my play; to create, plan, and run events, listen to concerns, or even just sit on a board is play for me because my mind is constantly brainstorming and thinking of something new, fun, or that will solve an issue. I will continue to play until I'm old, and because of this class never forget what my inner child wants to do. Thank you.

Art Show

  1. My impression of the art show was favorable. It was fun to see so many people on campus put themselves out there for the world to see. I had never been involved in any type of public display of art, so I really appreciated everybody that did submit a piece of their work.
  2. My favorite piece was the self portrait of the artist and also of her horse. It was well blended together so that the viewer really had to look and see that it was two different subjects being meshed together. I think it was really well done and is the one that I remember the most.
  3. The way I will keep PLAY involved in my life is to just to remember to have fun with life. Sometimes, I know it may come as a surprise, that I come off as old and bitter, and that is something that this class made me more self aware of. I hope to in the future to be able to take things more lightly and step back and just have fun with whatever the situation I am presented with may be.

Art Show- Parker Sheppard

Overall, I was amazed to see what some of the students here at Butler could do. The creativity and artistic ability was very eye-opening. There were very unique pieces of work and I thought each work was very different than the rest. My favorite was a picture/drawing was of a memory lane. I don't quite remember what the exact title of the piece was, but it was very appealing to my eye. It had mixes of the actual picture of the lane and also mixes of actual drawings of the lane, so it consisted of a bunch of pieces of the photograph and drawing. The fact that it had two types of art appealed to my eyes. PLAY will stick with me throughout my life by giving me reminders that is ok to be creative and put yourself out there. Those are the most successful people in this world.

The art show was really interesting. When I first walked in the first thing I saw was the tree shaped picture collage thing. My favorite piece was the painting that was done on two canvases with one slightly portruding out of the other. It was trees with their roots in the ground that almost looked like paint brushes. It really stuck with me because of the tree image. Trees are so beautiful up above the ground but would not be able to stand without their roots underneath. It reminds me of people...what you see on the outside is only possible because of the inner root structure of the person. I am going to make sure the whole play concept stay swith my life by looking at things in a different way and trying to see the fun aspect or the child's point of view.

It was very interesting to see the Art Show. It was the first time I've seen one at Butler and it showed me that creativity is not lacking in our school. The students expressed themselves through the art they created and it was really nice to see the different personalities incorporated into the art works. I really liked the photography classes' section. It was interesting to see what people thought of capturing in their pictures and it showed what was important to them to show in the exhibit. I liked the series of pictures that showed people dancing in a studio and all of these pictures were out of focus, I think it was done to create the illusion of movement and I really liked that theh photographer chose to make the pictures out of focus to show creativity instead of being like everyone else and making the pictures perfectly in focus and color.
The concept of Play will certainly remain in my life. In my everyday activities there's not much space for being creative and playful but in order to get through the routine making things entertaining and fun to go through I will deffinately make them fun. I really like playing with play dough and it is a great stress- reliever , so I am certainly going to include playing with play dough to just feel more confident in my creative abilities. The play concept will stay in my life and it will remind me of this class :)

Final Blog Post

Overall I thought the art show was very impressive and interesting. It was the first time I saw art that the students of Butler University have done since going to school here. My favorite part of the art show had to be the cardboard sculptures done by the other class. It was very interesting seeing how they built their projects and how they differed from the ones made by our class. I think it caught my attention partially due to the fact that I had a connection with that type of art since I struggled and built my own carboard sculpture. I am going to make sure that play stays a part of my everyday life because this class opened my eyes to a whole new side of play and creativity. I hope that when I graduate from the college of education I can find a way to create a classroom environment for my students that promotes PLAY like this class has.

Final Blog Post - Phil Schroeder

I enjoyed viewing the Art Show and thought that each of the different art classes had very unique projects and showings. My favorite art works were the self portraits because they all looked incredible and the techniques used in their creation were very creative. These drawings were able to capture my attention because they were different from everything else and the way they were drawn on black paper with white drawing utensils. I will make sure to keep play in my life by remembering to take time away from my busy life as a college student and just do the things that make me happy no matter what anyone tells me.

Art Show-Jenny Green

I have been to every art show at Butler since I started school here last year. This year's Art Show has been my favorite thus far. I enjoyed seeing the art work other students have created over the past semester. What also made this one more impressive for me was all the compliments I received from friends about my art work I had in the show. I enjoyed hearing feed-back from others about my work and describing all the work I have done this past semester in this class.
My favorite image at the Art Show was a photograph of a woman with a huge red bow in her hair. I cannot remember who the artist was, but that was my favorite image in the show. The image was simplistic with a black background which put more emphasis on the girl and the huge red bow she was wearing. Seeing this image made me remember all of the photography classes I took in high school and how much I miss that kind of work. Over break I will definitely be getting my camera out again to take photographs again. It has been one of my favorite hobbies that I have had to put on hold because of all the school work I have had this past semester.
I have already told my mom that over break I want to play lots and lots of board games and card games. I will also try and find some time during the week and set it aside to play a game. I enjoyed being able to play with play-doh again in this class. It reminded me of many great memories from being young. I will keeping play in my life so that I can have some enjoyment and breaks from studying.

Art Show Post

1) As I walked around the Reilly Room, I got the impression that all of us have a good amount of creativity. Seeing what other students from different classes were doing was really cool, and a lot of the work was well done. It was also really interesting to see the work that was done by people that I knew from my building and were friends with. I only know their strengths based off their majors so it was cool to see that they have abilities in the art area as well.
2) The piece of work that stuck my attention the most was the a cardboard sculpture that I saw by the door. I think it left an impact on me because we had to do this project too, but no one built one to that size. And because we had to do that project as well, I know the time and patience it takes, and that individual cut all those circles perfectly!
3) When it comes to keeping the play theme in my life, I think I can incorporate it in a few ways. Number one I can make sure to not take things to seriously and make an type of work I do fun. I can also be sure to do things in a creative way to to make things more visually appealing depending on what I am doing.

Katie Clark - Art Show

1. I really enjoyed the art show, it was great to see so much talent on display for everyone to see. Not only is it good for others to enjoy viewing but it is clear that throughout the room the displayed art represents considerable time and effort, and so it is great that the artists responsible can put their name up next to their piece where recognition and credit is due. I found myself really taken in by some of the pieces, often standing for quite a while just interpreting and wondering where the ideas sprang from. The atmosphere of the room indicated that most people viewing the art as I was were also entranced as they walked around very slowly with their eyes almost glued to the walls. I can’t really speak for the other viewers but I know that as I walked out of the room I felt very in touch with my creative side, that’s one of the things I love about looking at art; Even though you are analysing someone else’s creativity, it seems to be contagious as it makes you look at yourself in a very self-reflective way. I found much of the art thoroughly inspirational.
2. It is difficult to choose one piece of art that was my favourite from the show, i liked so many for different reasons; some for their purely artistic talent, others their meaning, some cleverness and some for their impressive creativity. Two pieces that I remember which demonstrated a real flare for drawing included a picture of someone’s eyes within a sort of horizontal watercolour painting with a script reading across the page. I liked this painting because I think eyes are beautiful as they can tell you so much about a person, if you ever see any doodles on my work pages it is often of eyes. The artist of this piece drew these eyes so well that they were almost photographic. Another piece which showed a real talent for drawing was a bird’s eye view of a city scene (or something of that nature...tall buildings/shapes) with a boy sitting in the centre of it all. The use of shading to exaggerate the effect of an above view was excellent in this drawing. Another piece which caught and held my attention was the DNA strand made up of family photos, i thought this was really clever and effective. The book of idioms which included pictures such as a cashier filled with peanuts to illustrate poor wages was also very clever. In terms of getting a message across, there were two pieces which struck me; one was a photograph of a street wall from a decaying part of the city with a person in the corner holding up an umbrella to hide themselves from the camera and the other was of a faceless girl crouched at a toilet, who clearly had bulimia. In the first picture “The umbrella project”, i interpreted it as a piece of art with a real element of realism in displaying the uglier parts of life as opposed to the beautiful sunset that we may be more willing to look at. As a psych/criminology major this kind of art really interests me, as in this case a picture really does say 1000 words. In the second piece which was in the style of an advertisement to get help if you have an eating disorder, the effect of the girls face not quite being in the shot and the caption “can you picture your face here?” was really effective and I think it is good enough to be used in actual ad campaigns.
3. In order to make sure that ‘Play’ remains a part of my life, I’ll probably try to spend more time with my younger siblings when I am home and say ‘yes’ more often when they ask me if I want to play a game with them. I remember when I was about 7 years old I would dread going to Brownies (girl scouts) but once I got there I always had so much fun, I think if I learn to say ‘yes’ more often I will automatically be integrating more play into my life.

Art Show- Michael Park

As much as I was exposed to art during the course of the semester, I had forgotten how amazing art could be. The art show truly reminded me of all the different types of art out there and that art has no limitations. I enjoyed that there was a good variety whether it was sculptures, drawings, or even graphic designs. Overall, I was impressed by all the artwork out there. What surprised me even more was the quality of everything that had been created. It just shows that everyone has a creative side to them and that it just needs to be awakened inside them. Out of all the artworks, a piece from the "Introduction to Illustration" left a profound imprint in my mind. I believe it was a sketch of a flower and a pot. It may sound mediocre, but the piece was unbelievable. The way it had been drawn and shaded especially caught my attention. It just looked so realistic, yet it was created by a person and a pencil which is extraordinary. Every single curve, line, shading seemed so perfectly placed, thus it was very successful at catching my attention. As far as the play aspect of my life goes, I do not believe that will be a problem. I think I have kept play as an aspect of my life thus far, but I just did not acknowledge it. Whether it is playing basketball, or even just playing video games, play will always be a part of my life. The hard part actually is trying not to play.

Art Show- Cam Thompson

I really liked the art show atmosphere because the music playing in the background helped get me into the display. I ended up wandering around much longer than I expected to because there were so many great pieces. I particularly enjoyed the graphic designs section because I have a couple of friends and teammates who talked about their projects during the semester, so it was great to see what they created. The lines were so crisp and professional- something that amazes me because I don't have that kind of cool computer skill. I checked out the graphic designs print advertisements for the art show, as well. The one that stood out to me the most presented words across a blank background and paint was dripping off the bottom of each letter onto the ground. It was very simple, easy to take in, quick enough to grab a viewer's attention, and drew the viewer in closer to take closer look. I couldn't recall any of the titles from the show, just what the artist's caption describing and narrating what their piece represented.
My absolute favorite piece from the art show was the 3-part image of a girl eating cake in the bathroom (none of the images showed her head. Like the artist explained, typical awareness ads for eating disorders tend to be in your face, graphic and kind of nauseating. This piece got the same message across about the prevalence of eating disorders and how it's easy to imaging "your" face on the girl and that such problems aren't limited to just super models and public stars.
I hope to continue the Play theme I have taken from this class by trying to make more time in my life to kick back, relax and hang out with my friends. It's easy to get wrapped up in our separate lives and school work to the point of somewhat isolating ourselves and becoming slightly oblivious to the fun, childishness, or simple pleasures in our environments. From being reintroduced to Play-Doh, to having to think back on some of my favorite childhood games for the Ultimate Toy Project, the creative exercises in this class have helped to uncover some of the novelty and pleasure I used to find in everyday happenings and classic games. I hope to be able to preserve this more playful outlook on life following this class :)

Art Show-Ashleigh Schneckenberger

I really liked going to the art show. I thought it was cool to see what my peers had done in there different classes and showed me the different opportunities. One piece really stood out to me though. I didn't catch the name of the piece but it had a tree on it and was made with two pieces of paper. I really like nature in pieces and this suited my interests perfectly. I will continue to use play in day to day use as well. The class taught me to think creatively and now I understand how to incoorperate play in everyday life. I will make games out of things and try too make things fun that may not be fun.

Art Show - Trent Miller

The art show was very interesting. It was really interesting to see all of the hard work that all of the other PCA art classes constructed. Most of the art was unique in the techniques that we talked about in class. When looking at the other cardboard sculptures you could get a sense of the same themes we were talking about in class. The one aspect of the art show that was very interesting to me would have to have been the graphic design class. It was really interesting to look at their projects. It was also very interesting that students could do something that spectacular. I was very impressed with them. I hope to keep the how Play idea fresh in my mind by using the techniques we learned in class to help me problem solve. I hope to be able to reuse the many techniques that Prof. Rao and Dr. Skinner have taught us. Overall I feel that these techniques will enrich my abilities to preform as a student.

Art Show - Rachel Heck

I thought the art show was very well laid out. The displays looked great and none of the pieces overpowered any other piece. All of the art work was outstanding, but my favorite piece was one of the silhouettes from another PCA class. The silhouette was wholly a nature scene. The outside of the figure was a peaceful, bright and sunny day. On the inside (it was not a different image entirely, but instead a continuation of the outside scene), was a dark version of the sunny day; almost as though a dark shadow had fallen on that section of the piece. The clouds were cumulonimbus with lightening striking the ground below them. The trees and grasses all had a shadow over them and the body of water near the trees had rain drops falling into i and water splashing from it. I love nature and I thought this silhouette was truly beautiful. :) So, I'd have to say it was incredibly successful in capturing my attention.
"Play" will always be a part of my life. I currently work at a nursery at a church, so I'm surrounded by little kids for three hours every weekend. They're all 3 and under and love to play with absolutely anything. Of course, I play right along with them!! Also, I am currently pursuing a volunteer position at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. That place has many fond memories stored within its walls from when I was younger. To be able to go back and watch the kids have as much fun as I remember having will keep "play" and enjoyment of the simplest things in life forever instilled in my heart.
Thank you Professor Rao and Dr. Skinner for teaching this class!!

Art Show- JoJo Ciancio

Overall, I thought the Art Show was pretty incredible. There were so many good pieces of artwork being displayed on hand. I almost felt as if my artwork did not belong in the same art show because my work was so simple compared to everyone else. This art show just reiterated how many talented young people there are in the world. We are fortunate to have a lot of talented artists here at Butler and that concept amazes me.
There were a lot of excellent pieces of artwork, but there were a few that captured my attention. However, I do not recall any of the titles of the artwork. So I will describe the artwork from the best of my ability. One piece was a picture that had to do with alcoholism. The picture contained a bunch of empty alcohol bottles. The piece was made because the artist’s dad died of alcoholism and she wanted to display how negative alcohol is to oneself. This piece was very powerful and it makes you stop and think. I am fortunate enough to have no one in my family that suffers from alcoholism and this picture reiterates how lucky I am. I am very blessed. Another piece that stood out to me was a piece done by one of my teammates called, “From Somebody to Nobody.” This piece stuck with me because this teammate is a friend of mine and I felt bad for him. I can understand why he is transferring schools now. He does not feel like he belongs here, and that saddens me because he is a nice kid and I really liked him as a friend. I am going to miss him.
In the end, play is something that will never leave my life. I feel like I play almost every day. I love messing around with my brother and sister as well as my friends. Play is a part of my nature and who I am. I love playing with my little cousins and acting like a little kid. I hope I never stop playing. I will try to make sure work does not take up my entire life and that I still have time to play because I love play.

Art Show - Caitlyn Carmony

I was very impressed with the art show. There was a lot of amazing pieces that had to have taken a lot of talent to make. I felt like my art wasn't much in comparison, but I'm not an artist. It was really cool to look at all the pieces and the projects displayed and I enjoyed it.

There are a few that I remember strongly. I do not remember what anything is called, but they stuck out for some unknown reason. I remember the bulimia poster with the girl eating cake in the bathroom. I think I remember this because it was interesting. I remember the picture of the alcohol bottles that had to do with alcoholism. I think this one stuck out because there is some alcoholism in my family. I remember my best friend Katie's piece, because she is my friend and I watched her make it. Finally there was a large painting of lots of colors. I have no idea what it was called but I think it is my favorite. It had white lines separating the different pieces of color and I just really liked it.

I will keep play in my life by playing every chance I get. If i see a playground, I'll be on it. If there's a board game to play, I'll play it. I won't let school and work and everything get me so down that I loose my sense of play. Play is the one thing I'll probably always have time for.

Art Show Reflection-Courtney Reynolds

1) I absolutely loved the art show, I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was definitely better than what I had anticipated; there was such great and creative work! I took some little notes while I was going through the rows just so I could remember what I liked about different displays. I really enjoyed the variety of art work; from graphic design to photography to pencil drawings and collages. LOVED IT! Oh, and the music was a nice background to everything as well :).

2) My favorite works were the photography for sure, I just loved them, however the art that stood out to me so much that it was the first piece I thought of when trying to answer this question was called "Generosity." It was not a photo, but it stood out to me the most. The student had made a tree shape out of the images of children's faces the background resembled a sky, and in bright red letters it said "Generosity" and a red shape was attached to the branch of the tree. I automatically was intrigued by how unique the piece was, but once I read the caption I was very touched. The artist had been given a red bracelet from a little girl she met on a trip to Honduras. The artist said that she obtained a whole new perspective on generosity as a result; a little girl with barely anything to her name was willing to give such a special gift. Wow. That piece was so touching and personal so it was definitely my favorite.

3) To maintain the idea of "play" in my life I will remember that anything can be turned into something fun. We discussed this in class one day, that even a monotonous activity can be turned into something fun and creative if we just put our minds to making it that way. I will try to remember that when I'm in a dry meeting or waiting in traffic.
