Ryan Rosebrough- Paper Value Project

With Valentine's Day right around the corner i decided to instill a theme of love into my paper. Our project was to increase the value of a normal sheet of paper as much as possible. With this in mind, I decided to make a Valentine's Day card to a special person in my life in hope to increase the paper's personal value. This is such a wonderful piece of art that I also increased its monetary value. Let's be honest, who would want this work? My inspiration for this came from popular art work by Simon Schubert and Peter Callesen. I simply cut out half of a heart and folded it over to create the full heart which I colored red with marker. The word "LOVE" is spelled across the bottom (it may be hard to see). I achieved this by creasing the paper over 3D letters that I had to give it an embossed effect.

Ashley - Paper Value Project

I added value to this plain piece of paper by gifting it to a friend. Now this may sound sappy (and it is) but it was the only way I could think of adding true value to the page. I thought about it for a while, and at first I was stumped. I considered making a boat.... then I realized I had no idea how to do that. Then I thought I might make a mask!.... but that's mainly because I was sitting in a masks class at the time. Finally, I sat down and thought about some of the most valuable things in my life. I looked around my room and realized that most of my favorite things were given to me by friends and family. So I decided to gift my piece of paper to one of my best friends. (She's a Pharmacy student so she always needs paper.) In doing so, I added personal and sentimental value to the paper.

Radha Patel-Paper Value Project

I made a scrapbook page paper out of my piece of paper to add value to it. I have been scrapbooking for about 3 years now and it has become a big part of my life. It gives us a way to show our memories through a small book. I have made one for myself, my sister and I am working on one for my parents. Last year I made four of them for my friends from high school to capture our memories so they can keep them forever. Scrapbook pages cost from 40 cents to a dollar normally. That is much more than a regular sheet of paper and I'm sure I can use this somewhere in one of the scrapbooks I make in the future. By making this scrapbook page, I added utility, personal and decorative value to this piece of paper.

Mike Ruff-Paper Value Project

To add some more value to my piece of paper, I decided to make a paper airplane. According to the online instructions, I made a paper airplane called "the dart". By making this paper airplane I added an entertainment or playful value. Children can play different games with paper airplanes and just about anybody who is bored can fold up a paper airplane and have some fun!

Kazmyn Perry- Paper Value Project

My picture is of an origami butterfly. It is the first piece of origami that I've ever made. I actually got help from a friend and that aspect of creating the origami butterfly gives it sentimental value. The aspect of figuring out how to make the butterfly gives it an educational value because I learned a new skill. The fact that I'll get points for doing so gives it an educational value as well. I feel that the idea behind the butterfly has symbolic value because it was created as an ode to the origami butterflies we saw in class on Tuesday. My butterfly is the first and will be the only of its kind because I made it, and  that gives it Kazmyn value :-).

William Lamar - Paper Value Project

I increased the value of a sheet of paper by making it desirable to a lot of people. I brainstormed ideas as to how companies increase the value of their products and decided to use as many techniques as possible to increase the value even more. The testimonial section lets people know that others also believe the product is good. Celebrity endorsements add to this effect. The no risk guarantee lets people know that this is a quality product, inferior products do not have the same guarantees. I was able to increase the paper's emotional, monetary and spiritual value to the consumer.

Paper Value Project

Whenever I'm getting dressed up for something, I love adding a big flower to whatever hairstyle I have. Unfortunately I also have a bad habit of losing the flowers I put in my hair. So I created a pretty paper flower for my hair, but it's not a big deal if I lose it because I can just make a new one. So I have added aesthetic value and utility by creating a decoration for my hair.

Lauren Bacon - Paper Value Project

When I was younger, my family and I went on road trip vacations relatively often. These could be week long trips driving cross country or just a short weekend getaway to a neighboring state. Once my brother and I were old enough to read, my mom bought us what we thought was the coolest thing ever to pass the time - books of Mad Libs. This could easily entertain us for hours of our tedious drive. Thus, I decided to create my own Mad Lib to add value to this piece of paper. This adds not only entertainment and creative value, but also comedic and learning value. It is important to test and expand your vocabulary as a child, and this is one of the best ways to do so other than reading. Plus, it is fun, and hilarious stories can be created.

I decided to add value to my piece of paper by decorating it with one of my favorite quotes. The phrase I wrote comes from the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, and they have always resonated with me. By decorating and writing this quote on the paper, I have added many kinds of value. The first is personal value, since this quote means a lot to me personally. I added artistic value by making it colorful and adding decoration to it. I also added sentimental value, because this quote reminds me of my freshman year of college, when I used it in a project I did in my Unit in Schwitzer where I met some of my best friends who I still love to spend time with. The piece of paper will now be hanging up in my room to remind me of those memories and how lucky I was to find these friends. (Sorry I can't get it to rotate!)

Veronika Lewis- Paper Value Project

I made a snowflake out of a single piece of paper to make it of some value to me. There is a lot of sentimental value with making snowflakes from when I was little and one specific time where this memory sticks out. The only year I remember there being a huge blizzard in Evanston, IL where I live, is in kindergarten. There were three teachers who taught kindergarten and only one showed up. I lived about a block from the school and my dad walked me over, but because barely any students showed up that day and there was only one teacher, we just made snowflakes the entire day. They taught us and we made huge ones, small ones, and many different designs. It was a really fun memory to me so there is value to it.

Lori Andriot- Paper Value Project

I crafted an origami heart in order to increase the value of a single piece of paper. This paper heart holds many values: sentimental, personal, and creative. Personally this heart hold sentimental value since I made them all the time for my parents when I was younger. However there can also be a creative/personal value; such as displaying the heart on books (I love books!). Hearts like this one can also be given during the Valentine season, which is just around the corner!

Caroline Hedrick- Paper Value Project

With the picture, it's difficult to tell what my paper creation is; it is a chain of paper people circling an outlined paper person. The phrase that's on the piece of paper is "you will always be surrounded by those who love you." A combination of the quote and the simplicity of the design has many added values. Artistic/childish value was evident with the simple uses. Emotional/sentimental value was obvious with the quote itself. The red heart stands out and farther demonstrates the quote.

Carly Sobolewski- Paper Value Project

In my opinion I added artistic value to the sheet of paper by creating a tiny scene on one end. The process actually took awhile because the miniature cuts and proportions had to be so precise. The scene is of a girl and boy, or woman and man standing by a tree with a swing on what looks to be a fall or winter day. If you peek through the smaller end of the cylinder you can see the details in the cut-outs. The idea was inspired by something I used to do with my dad and sister when I was a kid. We would use cardboard or paper cut-outs to make shadows on the wall and tell stories or perform puppet shows. These memories from my childhood give it personal/sentimental value as well. The paper is no longer a flat sheet, instead it has begun to form and tell a story of its own.

Alison Harre- Paper Value Project

To increase the value of this sheet of paper I printed my resume on it. I think that I added many different types of value to this sheet of paper. First of all, I added a personal value to the paper. The experiences that I list on my resume I chose for a reason. The experiences were important enough to me that I would want to share them with a future employer. I added a professional value as well as an occupational value. This is because my resume holds my future. My resume sells who I am and is a main keystone in the pursuit of my future. Also I think I added an adaptable value because my resume will be continuously changing. As I proceed through my college years I will collect more experiences that I think are important and will add them to my resume. A resume might seem very simple, but the value that can be added to it surpasses simplicity.

Jamie Kostecki- Paper Value Project

To increase the value of this piece of paper, I cut it into a square-swirl of sorts. The value was increased aesthetically or artistically, I'd say. Due to the amount of time that I put into cutting this piece of paper, a good 20 minutes or so, that also helped to raise the value. Although it may seem like I destroyed or made the paper less useful, it's undeniable that it is much more interesting than it originally was; thus value has been added. The versatility of the paper has gone up as well: it can be positioned, turned, or almost sculpted into many completely different forms. So the versatility of it has also increased the value.

Alexis Marin- Paper Value Project

I increased the value of the plain, white piece of paper by making it into a sailor hat. To add to its value, I decorated it with anchors and the Greek letters for "D" "G" all in bronze, pink, and blue. If you haven't figured it out by now, all this symbolizes my sorority, Delta Gamma, which I have just recently joined. This definitely increased the paper's value to me because my sorority is something I already value SO much. I would say I added personal value to this.

Mark Hirschenberger- Paper Value Project

When thinking of ideas to make a piece of paper have value, I wanted to choose something that had great personal value to myself. I chose a quote by singer/songwriter Conor Oberst to add value to the paper. The quote is "If the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall, I think we'd see the beauty then and stand staring in awe." When I first heard this quote a few years ago, it moved me. It made me look at the world from a different perspective; almost as if the world was a beautiful painting and beauty was all around us. It made me appreciate everything around me as if it were a painting or piece of artwork. This photo represents personal and artistic value.

Katie Zeiger- Paper Value Project

I increased the value of a regular piece of paper by creating a awesome paper hat! This could be used for entertainment, imagination, or utility (maybe you really need a hat). Although this particular hat is quite small, it would work for a small child, doll, stuffed animal, or even a pet! I can remember making similar paper hats in pre-school, but instead out of newsprint. So, in a way making this also had some sentimental value to me, taking me all the way back to the age of 4.

Sarah Leib- Paper Value Project

I increased the value of this piece of paper by making a blow up cube from just a single piece of paper. The value of this paper cube could be used for entertainment/enjoyment. Without using any other materials, I was able to construct this.

Andre Smith- Paper Value Project

I increased the value of the paper by making it into a sign. I wrote on it "By recycling one ton of paper you save 17 trees. Save the trees!" It has two different kinds of value. The first kind of value is obviously informative value. It is informing the reader of the benefits of recycling. The other kind of value it has is statistical value. The sign uses a statistic to inform the reader.
