Final Blog Post

Overall I thought the art show was very impressive and interesting. It was the first time I saw art that the students of Butler University have done since going to school here. My favorite part of the art show had to be the cardboard sculptures done by the other class. It was very interesting seeing how they built their projects and how they differed from the ones made by our class. I think it caught my attention partially due to the fact that I had a connection with that type of art since I struggled and built my own carboard sculpture. I am going to make sure that play stays a part of my everyday life because this class opened my eyes to a whole new side of play and creativity. I hope that when I graduate from the college of education I can find a way to create a classroom environment for my students that promotes PLAY like this class has.

Silhouette Project - Grant Lewis

For my silhouette project I decided to focus on the things I use during the week (inside the green) versus the things I use on the weekend (inside the black). I thought that this would give me an interesting point of view to see how I change as a consumer during the week as compared to the weekend. While creating this project I decided against cutting labels and advertisements out of magazines and decided to focus purely on products that I had in my room and at my fingertips so I could actually take the logos off of them. I felt that this approach would do a better job of showing me what I really use each day instead of what I think I would use or would rarely use. So since I didn't have enough logos to fill the entire page I decided to cut up two different colors of construction paper and glue them as a collage on the poster board to clearly highlight where the lines of my silhouette are. This also made the silhouette more unique and created an interesting texture throughout the entire piece.
It surprised me to find that I use more products during an average week day compared to the weekend. I think this may be due to the fact that I have a lot more to do during the week and enjoy relaxing on the weekends. I decided that many of the things I purchase are very simple and don't make much of a statement about who I am individually. I believe that you would find many of the same goods in the majority of college students rooms. However I feel that it is a good thing that all the logos and brands don't make much of a statement about who I am as an individual because I believe that these aren't extremely important or 100% necessary in my life.

Pitching Public Art- Grant Lewis

I really enjoyed working on the pitch project with my group and feel like we worked great together. I think that we did a great job presenting our idea for the Butler Bubbles and made it an idea everyone could visualize. Josh, Jojo and I all did a great job of working as a team to come up with a common idea as well as finding ways to split up the work load evenly. I really enjoyed seeing everyone else's views on this project and it really inspired me to think more about public art ideas for Butlers campus. I think a piece of public art like some of the ones mentioned in class would be a great addition to Butler and is an idea that Bobby Fong should consider.

Grant Lewis- 100 Acres Reflection

My experience at 100 Acres was a lot like the ones that were exhibited in the PBS video. I usually wouldn't be caught dead in an art museum simply because they bore me, however the artwork in 100 acres was extremely interesting and fun for me to look at. I think that since engineering and artwork were combined to make these pieces that it is much more appealing to many people. The one piece that raised the most questions for me was also the one that I liked the most. That piece of artwork was the two giant circles suspended in the air known as Team Building(Align). I found it interesting because i found myself wondering how they built it and how they positioned it so during the summer solstice the shadows would combine as one. I thought the piece of artwork was an eye catcher and would interest and raise many questions from future visitors to 100 Acres.

Grant Lewis- Play-Doh and Creativity

The article states, " Its left to the luck of the draw who becomes creative: there's no concerted effort to nurture the creativity of all children." After participating in the play-doh activity in class I realized how well this quote described the school system I grew up in. I was always told to do book work or solve problems in class and was never given time to express myself through creativity. I am an education major at Butler and have learned the importance of supporting creativity in my classroom through this article and activity. I hope that in my future classroom I can find ways to support children's creativity rather than teach them to ignore it.

My Favorite Toy

My favorite toy while growing up was a football. My friends and I would spend the entire day playing pick up backyard football games or simply just throw it around to pass the time. A football is still to this day is my favorite toy.
