Final Blog Post - Phil Schroeder

I enjoyed viewing the Art Show and thought that each of the different art classes had very unique projects and showings. My favorite art works were the self portraits because they all looked incredible and the techniques used in their creation were very creative. These drawings were able to capture my attention because they were different from everything else and the way they were drawn on black paper with white drawing utensils. I will make sure to keep play in my life by remembering to take time away from my busy life as a college student and just do the things that make me happy no matter what anyone tells me.

Silhouette Project - Phil Schroeder

My silhouette project focused on the items I consume on a daily basis and how they affect me personally. On the outside of my project are all of the items that I use externally. This includes my clothing, entertainment, and car to name a few examples. On the inside are all the items I use internally or on my body such as food items, shampoo, and toothpaste. This project has brought into the light the extensive amounts of products that I consume on a daily basis. As a consumer I purchase many name brands like element clothing, Underarmor apparel, orbit gum, and Gatorade beverages. This project has also helped me to discover the amount of different products I use just in my every day life. I never really tried to make a list of every name brand item I used in a day and as the day went on the list grew larger and larger. I also noticed how I tend to only purchase name brand products such as Axe products and American Eagle clothing, even when these products are generally more expensive. This project helped me to understand the power of design and name brands because it is considered the social norm and better to wear clothes from Nike, Underarmor, or American Eagle even when a person could buy much more generic clothing for the same prices. Overall this project has helped me to understand myself as a consumer and how the world of marketing helps to add value to many different name brand items.

Proposal - Phil, Michael, and TJ

We proposed our artwork to be placed in Butler’s Holcomb Gardens. The structure that we created is a basketball shaped arch with benches in the center of it. It is called the Athletes Haven. The arches from an above view form the cross-section of a basketball and they are made of metal. Also, it has gravel paths and flower beds that decorate the interior space. Also, there are small mini-ponds in there with fish swimming around. It is basically a place where people can relax and enjoy the scenery around them.

Our artwork was called the Athletes Haven because it resembles a getaway from society that athletes have when they play their respective sports. When the general public thinks of sports, they most commonly think about rough, cut throat competition and loud noises. However, for athletes, sports can be simply taking a break from their everyday lives as well. For example, let’s say a freshman student in high school has had a long day in school. He failed his math test and just broke up with his girlfriend. When he finally goes to basketball practice and starts shooting some hoops, he can take his mind off his miserable day. Also, basketball is something he enjoys so it is like taking a vacation from everyday life. This is one way sports can be a relaxing getaway. Just like how athletes can play sports to relieve their stress and relax, ordinary people can take time away from their lives and enjoy some moments in the Athletes Haven. That is why this structure should be put in Holcomb. The garden is secluded from the rest of the campus andrepresents a peaceful and lively place.

100 Acres Park - Phil Schroeder

I believe that my experience at the 100 Acres Park was very similar to those in the video. I was able to see all of these works of art in person and many of them I was even able to touch and experience physically instead of just looking at them. The piece that raised the most questions for me was Indianapolis Island because there are actually people living inside it. The questions I have are what the inside of the island looks like and how was it made to serve as a functional home for two people. Also team building really stood out to me because of its simplicity and also its meaning.

Phil Schroeder - Play-Doh and Creativity

In the article creativity is said to decline as we grow older. By participating in the Play-Doh exercise I was able to use my creative side even though I am an eighteen year old in college. The reason for the decline of creativity with age is that everyone has this misguided belief of what an adult is. Many people believe that to grow up we must cast away our imagination and creativity to forward our knowledge in school and get a career. This is completely untrue because creativity is important and if everyone could have the opportunity to just sit down for an hour and play with Play-Doh and just have fun and be creative, they would probably realize that their creative side is important. I think it is much more important for us to be creative as adults because since we don't always have time for fun and play we must do whatever we can to hold onto the creative and imaginative side of ourselves.

Phil Schroeder - My Favorite Toy

When i was a kid my favorite toy was definitely legos. I loved how you could make anything you wanted to play with. It was also very exciting to build a set and watch as very simple pieces came together to create something incredibly complex and fun to play with.
