Keriann Roush-Art Show Reflection

I honestly didn’t think the art show was very well organized. I had no idea what a lot of things were, who made them, what their purpose or inspiration was. It just seemed a bit haphazard to me, and I was distracted by it all. Because of this, its hard for me to identify a favorite piece. None if it is really anything that interests me or I would ever pay for, or display in my home. However, if I had to pick something there was a set in the series of vegetable promotions. The designs with the tomato were very well done, and potentially I would pay for it as a marketing campaign. It was very well done, cohesive, and the colors were well chosen. I think having an art show at Butler is great, but if I weren’t in this class I would have no idea it existed. Finding a way to promote it on campus and bring awareness would be really beneficial. I also think that displaying art in it should be VOLUNTARY, not mandatory. Art is a very personal thing, and sometimes not everyone wants to display theirs and is made uncomfortable by this. Maybe it should even be open to students who weren’t in an art class but have art, pending approval, that they would like to display. I just think students should have the right to make the choice, display if you want but you can choose not to.

Keriann Roush-Milk Project

For Moo-Moo Milk Makers new adult milk beverage I chose to go with a modern and simple approach. My research of current milk products on the market showed a lack of innovation. Nearly all the products I reviewed were in traditional rounded shape milk bottles, jugs, or cartons. For my design I wanted to go in a completely different direction and stand out from the hum-drum of current milk products.

Our target market, adults 45 years old and above, are more savvy and modern than many give them credit for. They strive to maintain vestiges of youth, are health conscious, and seek to invigorate their life-style. Our design attempts to appeal to this group with a modern square bottle with beveled edges. This deviation from traditional milk bottles shows an updated side to a classic, much like our target market.

The logo design and packaging are purposely kept simple. A blue circle with our brand name “rejuva milk” is front and center. Underneath that it says “Organic Fat-Free Premium Milk”, this lets consumers know exactly what they are getting. At the bottom there is a sun with the words “Refresh Yourself”. I chose the bright sun and these words to remind people of morning, getting a good start and feeling refreshed. The blue I chose feel calm, cool, and collected. Which is how many busy people over 45 wish their lives felt more often. This is the feeling we want to convey with our marketing campaign.

The rest of the design is equally simple. On one side, we give a brief marketing line “Refresh your mind, body, and soul.” This will be the main theme of our marketing campaign for rejuva milk. The other side contains nutrition facts and reminder to keep the beverage cold with the quote “As in life, chill for best results.” This serves as another reminder of the calm, refreshed feeling we are trying to convey. The back is intentionally left blank to keep the design simple and uncluttered.

The final design is simple and modern, yet still reminiscent of a classic time.

Keriann Roush-Comic Strip

A father took his son out to fish in the sea. They had caught many fish when suddenly a whirlpool appeared in front of their boat. “What is that?” The son cried. They were both very frightened when the animal surfaced, “OMG, a dolphin!” And everything was ok.

Silhouette Collage

My silhouette collage was created using nearly all geometric shapes except where creating my silhouette require the use of half amorphous shapes. Using mainly geometric shapes was a way for me to illustrate my need for control and order in my life. I like things to be a certain way which is why my silhouette is well ordered mosaic tiles. The different colors of the tiles represent different aspects of my personality. Cool, pale blues are a calming color to me, they represent my efforts to keep my life well ordered and laid back when possible. The darker blues are more mysterious and indicate a more brooding aspect to my personality. The shades of silver are bright, they show that when I am good at something I can really shine. The pops of grapefruit color are to show that I am not always serious and do have a fun and spontaneous side. In the ground around my silhouette I used dark colors, a lot of contrasting colors, and some brighter colors to represent different elements of the world as I see it. Its a lot to look at, sort of chaotic and a little distracting, which is how the world often seems to me. I also used some of the same mosaic tiles from my silhouette in the background to show how I try to influence and control some of the world around me. I noticed when I finished my collage that my silhouette almost seems to be lost among the many elements I included. It surprised me, but seemed fitting to my personality. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the world, I don’t like being the center of attention and prefer to find a way to blend in to the background. Although if people care to look, I am easy enough to find.

Keriann Roush-Fashion/Color Reflection

1. I learned that everyone loves to wear NorthFace jackets. Well maybe not everyone, but I was definitely surprised by the number of people around me that I had never noticed wearing one before. Also, my group discussed the differences between the clothes we really like to wear, and the more comfortable and plain attire we often wear to class. The other girls in my group seemed to like many of the same colors I do, as well as brighter clothes often with a floral print.

2. The line of clothing I came up with was called Five Minutes Later... For me this name makes sense because it always seems like five minutes later I am changing my mind or doing something different. My colors for my line were pale blue, deep teal, and camel. The line would be aimed at 20-something women looking for casual but classic summer where. The kind of girl who likes to wear cowboy boots with a sun dress, a little bit of free spirit. The dress in my picture would most definitely be a part of this collection.

For work I would typically wear a high waisted pinstripe grey pencil skirt with a pale blue shirt and neutral colored high heels. In my leisure time, I’d probably wear a sun dress and boots, particularly to an outdoor concert in the summer time.

Public Art Pitch Reflection

1) If I were a Butler Alum looking to invest in one of these projects I would probably choose the Butler Planner. The Butler Planner would be unique to Butler, it would add an aesthetic value that would really help to brighten our campus, and its utility as an information center and a place to lounge would be a great asset. I definitely think the Butler planner fills a need for students to be more informed about what's going on around campus and to have easier access to that information.

2) I think the Butler planner would require the most initial funding. It involves several large structures as well as the planner itself, all of which would be costly to build. Because it is outside there could also be significant maintenance costs to keep things running smoothly and looking good.

3) If we could revise our pitch, I think we might expand a little on the benefits the project would bring to campus. I feel that we got it all in there, but we could have slowed down and focused more on each individual benefit and aspect of the project.

Public Art Proposal Project:
Ask Blue

For the public art proposal project, our group has decided to make a touch screen interactive sculpture called Ask Blue. Ask Blue is a figure that features a sculpture of Blue the bulldog, metal blue and silver flames, a silver textured metal frame around a monitor, and a shiny black painted wall behind it.

Ask Blue will possess numerous things that we find would be useful to people on campus. It will have a touch screen calendar, which will have a list of all the events and club activities on campus with information regarding time and requirements included. There will be a stamp next to events that count towards the Butler Cultural Requirement. It will also include a map of campus telling the user where they are and how to get to wherever they want to go. There will be a search feature at the top of the screen if the user is just concerned about a specific topic. While the machine is not being used, various fun facts about Butler will flash across the screen to really give Ask Blue a friendly feel.

The color and design pattern play a very important part in the proposal. The blue and silver flames serve as a play on the Butler torch symbol, which we believe is not really incorporated a lot in things on campus. We also decided to use the statue of Blue to make the user feel like they are really getting information from Blue, which makes it more interactive. The use of the silver textured frame and the black wall serve to make Ask Blue more visually appealing to draw people’s attention and to get them to use it.

We believe Ask Blue is a necessity on campus. We all sat down as a group and talked about issues we faced as students and saw that we all had similar problems. We all saw that we sometimes overlook emails, do not know when certain clubs meet, find it hard to navigate the school website, and want to find a way to meet new people. Our problems are problems all students face, upperclassmen and lower classmen, and Ask Blue’s features help solve them. Since there is an easy to use calendar that lists all events for each day so students can sort through which ones they want to attend. And, we all agreed that it was a little tricky finding our way around campus at the beginning of the year. But, with the map that can tell you where to go, this problem would no longer be an issue.

Another added benefit for campus is that Ask Blue allows for advertisements. Campus clubs can advertise on Ask Blue for free, which is great for clubs who are looking to add more members and raise awareness for themselves. While a user is navigating through Ask Blue, ads will appear at the bottom of the screen informing them about different clubs and how to join. In addition, local businesses can advertise on Ask Blue for a fee, which could be used by campus to fund other projects.

We chose four locations for Ask Blue: the HRC, the ResCo lobby, Starbucks in Atherton Union, and the South Mall. We realized that these are the places with the highest amount of student traffic so this would allow Ask Blue to be utilized in its fullest. To raise awareness for Ask Blue, we have designed a flyer that would be distributed to students on campus and nearby businesses. This way, the community will know that this utility exists and will want to use it.

Overall, we as a group see Ask Blue as being a creative and innovative way for students to find out information about on campus activities and local businesses, which allows them to be more involved and find things they enjoy at Butler.

Paper Value Project

Whenever I'm getting dressed up for something, I love adding a big flower to whatever hairstyle I have. Unfortunately I also have a bad habit of losing the flowers I put in my hair. So I created a pretty paper flower for my hair, but it's not a big deal if I lose it because I can just make a new one. So I have added aesthetic value and utility by creating a decoration for my hair.
